Teaching & Choreo Work

Whilst my Bollywood teaching journey didn’t start until late 2009, my passion for teaching dance actually started way back in the late 80s. I was in primary school and somehow managed to round up a few friends to whom I taught my own choreography I had created to Johnny Farhnam’s hit, Take the Pressure Down. I don’t recall if we ever actually performed it – and there was no social media or phone cameras back then so it wasn’t recorded… but to this day I still remember some of the chorus!

When my first Bollywood dance teacher asked me to teach a beginners class for another venue, I honestly didn’t think I had been dancing long enough to teach others. But her faith in me gave me the confidence, and I started by teaching songs I had learned in her class, following her class format including warm ups and warm downs.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, as I had been dancing Ballroom style since 2000, but it wasn’t until I became a Zumba instructor that discovered that there was no actual legal requirement to teach a dance class – unless you were teaching exam syllabus (like RAD etc). That was when I decided I didn’t want to be unqualified and went and completed further studies. Since then, I have continually aimed to improve my knowledge and still continue to learn from other teachers to this day.
